Mounds of evidence show that connecting with nature can reduce anxiety, depression, PTSD, and even ADHD. Nature connection can also improve mood, sleep, resilience, mindfulness, cognitive abilities, and physical health. How can this be?
Wellbeing is rooted in belonging and purpose. Belonging and purpose are created by our environment, so we modern humans are pretty confused. After all, we didn’t co-evolve with cars and computers for millennia. We co-evolved with the natural world. In the most ancient way, we belong to nature. Because of this, we have a bevy of untapped capabilities to communicate with the land and its inhabitants. In a society that insists on staying separate from nature, we suffer from loneliness and despair. Most of us don’t even know that what we’re yearning for is reconnection.
Healing starts when we reconnect with our nature community. Uncertainty and anxiety give way to clarity and vitality. We discover our true nature.

This allows us to uncover hidden meaning that only shines through when we use the right lens. It’s playful. And deep. Integral theory follows a long line of thought leaders, such as Abraham Maslow, Jean Gebser, Ken Wilbur, and many more. Master coach Linda Bark, PhD translated these theories into practical frameworks for transformational coaching, and I studied with her. At the same time, I trained in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and The Work That Reconnects (go Joanna Macy!) and later ran NVC workshops at Google.

This intensive program, along with various nature-based workshops from the Stalking Wolf lineage (Tom Brown, Michael Jospe), coyote mentoring (Jon Young, Ellen Baas), and my own life experiences form my perspective on nature-based coaching. I have gratitude and respect for so many who have shared their wisdom.

Most recently, I led global content strategy for Google’s Digital Wellbeing initiative and Wellbeing Lab, where I advocated for DEI and intentional relationships with our environments to improve mental wellbeing. Somewhere along the (wavy) line, I published a couple books and a podcast on nature-based wellbeing.
