About
What’s modern nature?
It’s pretty audacious to claim that there’s a modern nature, as if the timeless spirit of wild terrains, flora, fauna, and forces of the universe could somehow become outdated. For about 13.5 billion years now, the primary elements of life have followed the same organizing principles to form a reality as complex as it is elegant. So as much as humans have deformed the natural world, we haven’t fundamentally reformulated it.
What’s new, or modern, about nature is that one of its animal constituents—human beings—have largely forgotten that they belong to the natural world. We identify less with nature than we do with our minds, which create tools and systems that defy the very principles that created us and keep us in harmony with the rest of nature. Pandemics of viruses and mental illness dominate our lives now as a result of our disidentification with nature.
The task of our time then, is to find a way to rebalance today’s tools and systems with the natural world to experience global wellbeing. And since modern technologies originate from our minds, the most upstream place to begin is within each of us. Modern nature is the society that we create when we re-identify with nature, and ensure that all of our tools and systems work in harmony with nature’s principles. The physical, cultural, technological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of modern life are reintegrated with the natural world. Of course a task this monumental requires equally robust community support and action…

Academy fundamentals
-
Everything in nature—from rocks, plants, animals, sounds, emotions, ecosystems, gravity, and solar systems—follows universal organizing principles. The principles of diversity, cycles, interdependence, adaptation, regeneration, geometry, and oneness are some examples (see living systems theory, liology, biomimicry, et al).
-
In other words, humans are nature, as are our senses, emotions, and psyches. Imagine what a psyche raised by nature knows! However, most people today suffer from severed belonging, cut off from our larger selves, our wholeness, nature. This is not accidental. Over millennia, patriarchy and colonization have systematically severed people and cultures from our nature-based heritage. Healing the intergenerational trauma will take generations more as we co-create a nature-based society that is multicultural, equitable, compassionate, intentional, interconnected, and joyful.
-
The questions of what consciousness is, what or who possesses it, and when it first arose are as old as, well, perhaps consciousness! We don’t know the answers to these questions, but understand that the ability to self-organize requires a self, which is what we’re talking about when we say, ‘anima’.
-
The right to be treated humanely and equitably is nature’s birthright. This requires the decolonization of minds and systems in order to shift ‘power over’ hierarchies to ‘power with’ communities. We honor all anima as self-directed, entitled to their own purpose and to unconditional belonging to the larger natural world.
-
Each aspect of nature has co-evolved in relationship with others around it. This has created an exquisitely tuned system that cannot be altered without cascading consequences to nature as a whole.
-
Humans, like other animals, create tools to meet various needs. As such, technologies are extensions of nature.
-
Technologies aren’t truly self-organizing (yet), and are often made for goals or in ways that run contrary to the principles of nature. These are unnatural by definition, and cause great suffering.
-
Modern technology promises dazzling possibilities for our collective evolution. But its belonging in the world is a privilege, earned by being humane. Humane technology works in harmony with and in service to nature. It refuses extractive practices such as unsustainable mining or labor practices (of humans and animals). Humane technology enables us to connect with, understand, and support the natural world (including ourselves).
-
To experience reciprocity and the abundance it provides, we must work to understand each other’s languages, so that we may freely give and receive the nourishment each of us needs. By knowing abundance, we can wake up from the myth of scarcity and relinquish the fear that keeps us separate and unwell.
-
Many people today identify as cultural nomads, feeling empty of place-based practices that create deep connections with nature. Nature connection practices need to be created anew, resurrected from history, or learned from others. Naturally, people will be seeking wisdom and inspiration across time and cultures. However, the wisdom-holders of these practices today have suffered intergenerational trauma from the brutality of colonization, which largely aims to sever people from nature in the first place. Creating a modern nature requires that we only adopt practices that have been gifted to us through kinship or goodwill, that we look to our own ancestors for lost wisdom, and that we develop unique practices in council with the land.
Transformation stirs up feelings of fear, anxiety, and sometimes the strong desire to hold on to what’s considered ‘normal’ or ‘safe’. Some people retreat to old ways, which by default run contrary to a nature-based life. It’s important to resist the urge to regress to unsustainable practices, and instead progress toward life-affirming possibilities by seeking the support of our community—which is as large as the universe itself.

FAQs
How do I connect with nature?
There are so many ways to connect with nature, and the best way is the one that’s easy and accessible. Connecting with nature is about more than just visiting a green space. It’s about creating a relationship with the natural world, its animals, plants, elements, landscapes, weather systems, seasonal cycles, and principles. Here at the Academy, we’re big fans of the University of Derby’s Nature Connectedness Research Group “5 Pathways Framework.” Just like any other relationship, we deepen our knowledge and appreciation of nature through the senses, emotion, beauty, meaning, and compassion. Become a member now for free courses!
How do I work with you?
Glad you asked! We recommend that individuals looking to improve their own life and relationships (to self, others & nature) sign up online for a free membership, and schedule an introductory call with a nature-based coach to get started. Organizations looking to improve team wellbeing and problem-solving can contact us to develop a custom program to fit your needs. Potential partners looking to collaborate on events or initiatives can drop a note. We look forward to connecting with you!
Online or on the land?
Both! We structure offerings to be delivered online and on land based on the benefits we’re seeking. Research shows that nature connection practices online, just like on land, can be effective in improving mood and resilience. Online has the added benefit of convenience and makes it more likely that a new skill will become a regular practice. That’s why we offer courses, coaching, and media online. When it’s time to integrate the nature connection experience into your bones, nothing compares to being on the land and sharing your story with others, face-to-face. That’s when we hold retreats, workshops, and events. Try it all!
Why’s the membership free?
We have big aspirations here at the Academy, and can’t do it alone. The biggest barrier to creating a supportive, regenerative community should never be money! That’s why we want as many people as possible to join in on the conversations, to learn, practice, and share so we truly co-create the future together. Just like the mightiest rivers start upstream as baby brooks, we’re starting small and collecting nourishment along the way. Join us in December 2023 to get free access to the Academy’s magazine and growing selection of courses, fireside chats, and community forums. And event discounts too!
